Hydraulic Pressure Relief Valves
Hydraulic pressure relief valves limit the maximum pressure in a hydraulic system. When the pressure reaches the set value, the valve opens and returns oil to tank, so the pressure cannot rise further. This protects the pump, hoses, cylinders and other components against overload, and it is essential with a fixed displacement pump, which keeps delivering flow when the actuators stop.
Relief valves are installed in two ways. Inline relief valves have threaded ports and sit directly in the pipe line, typically right after the pump as the main system relief. NG6 (D03) sandwich relief valves sit in a valve stack and limit the pressure of a single station or of one actuator line, for example to give one cylinder a lower force than the rest of the system. Many systems combine both: one main relief valve plus lower limits where individual actuators need them.
Choose a setting range that contains the required pressure, check that the valve handles the full flow it may have to relieve, and match the connection. To hold part of a circuit at a lower constant pressure rather than limit a maximum, use a pressure reducing valve instead.
