Stop sleeves thread onto the body of a pneumatic shock absorber to set its effective working length. Sliding the sleeve to a new mounting depth changes how far the absorber projects past its bracket, giving a repeatable end position.

The sleeve runs on the same fine thread as the absorber, so it locks against the bracket and acts as a mechanical hard stop. Pre-loading the piston rod against the sleeve takes the rod out of its free-travel zone, which improves consistency on light masses that would otherwise barely move the piston.

Common applications include conveyor end-of-travel positioning, robot arm soft-stops, and rotary index tables, where the impact distance must be tuned to the cycle without machining the bracket.
